Born on October 7, 1936, at a farm village in Tsuwano, located in western part of Shimane Pref. Graduated
from the Tokyo University of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Engineering (Civil) and simultaneously
graduated from the Tokyo Photo School (night school). After graduated, started as a freelance photographer
working on the Minamata Disease Case, subsequently appeared as the maiden work. Published “Minamata” at the
Fuji Photo Salon, Ginza, in autumn, 1963. The aspect of declining coal mine, “Chikuho” was shot in 1959, at
the school days. “Korea” was recorded over a quarter century from 1964. The then Korean society was
turbulent with the political unrest. During shooting period from 1967 to 1975, met with the Tet Offensive in
1968. “Russia” was shot at Moscow in August 1991 meeting with the coup d’êtat that led the collapse of the
Soviet Union.
Main photo exhibitions are: “Minamata” (the first was in 1962), “Korea” (1966), “Vietnam” (1979), “Russia” (1994), etc.
Main published books (photo collections) are: “Minamata” (1965), “Korea” (1986), “Vietnam” (1999), “Russia” (1995), and further as written book “the Photo Journalist”.
Awarded: Freshman Prize of Japan Photo Critics Association (1963), Kodan-sha Photographic Prize (1965), Ina Nobuo Prize (1982) and Dong Gang Prize (Korea, 2003).
The Kuwabara Shisei Photographs Museum was established in 1997 at his native place Tsuwano.

1964年から四半世紀に渡り、政治的混乱により情勢が不安定だった「韓国」を撮影。
1967年から1975年にかけてベトナムを取材。
1968年、ヴェトナム戦争の最大の転機となったテト攻勢に遭遇。
1991年8月、ソ連崩壊のきっかけとも言える8月クーデターを含む「ロシア」を撮影。
1997年、生まれ故郷である島根県津和野町に「桑原史成写真美術館」が設立された。
